Chapter 11

Kael

They were off, and I was alone in the darkened house, waiting for what I knew was probably my last battle. All I knew was that I had to try to stop Sebastian or at least slow him down. I wasn’t sure that I could do that. He was the better swordsman and had always been more aggressive. I remembered how he’d been overpowering at times when we were lovers. I didn’t want to face him.

It was a long wait in the upstairs bedroom, waiting for him to arrive. For a moment, I worried that he’d predicted my actions and had gone after Fiore and the boys. Then I heard the horses in the drive. He’d brought a couple of friends, at least. I sighed. Fighting off one would have been easier than fighting off three. He was a coward. He should’ve come for me on his own. Moments later, the door smashed in. Then I heard his voice, angry and determined. “Find the traitor and bring him to me. We need him alive to face the king.”

I heard a commotion from the stairs echoed in the hall. The door flew open, and two men rushed forward, swords out. I drew my sword and quickly dispatched them. They laid on my floor, their blood pooling in front of me.

“I didn’t expect them to win.” I looked up, and he stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame. “Hello, Kael. Perhaps you should make this easy on yourself and tell me where the whore and his nephews are.”

“Don’t speak ill of my spouse.” I was trying to sound brave, but I certainly didn’t feel it. “I’ll tell you nothing.”

“Pity,” he said, “I was so hoping that I wouldn’t have to attend your execution.”

“I think you’ll have to defeat me first.”

“You say that like you think it’ll be hard.” He drew his blade slowly so that the ring of the blade lasted longer than usual. There was a moment’s hesitation and then a vicious jab. I deflected it and returned the thrust, and then the battle began in earnest. Wild slashes flew as blade met blade. He grabbed my arm and tossed me out into the hall. Following quickly after me, I cried out as his sword pierced my left arm. Finally, I was able to get my right arm up to meet his blows.

He kicked me, and I fell down the stairs that were somehow behind me now. I laid at the bottom of the stairs, breathing hard and feeling every joint in my body scream with pain. He descended the stairs slowly. He stood over me, a smug smile on his face. “I expected better. Imagine my disappointment.”

“I’d rather not.”

He kicked my sword away. “I think we’re done here.”

“Fuck you!”

In moments, he was on me, flipping me onto my back and gripping my wrists in a painful grip. One of his knees dug into my thigh. His face was within inches of mine, and I could see the fire in his eyes.
